Na Sciurnata Amara

Editorial and Illustration Project

Na sciurnata Amara is an editorial and illustrated project that explores the system of caporalato — the exploitation of migrant labor in southern Italy. It tells the story of Amara, a fictional 17-year-old from Ghana, whose voice is built from interviews with real migrants and journalists. The narrative, written in a mix of Italian and local dialects, recounts a day in the fields through Amara's eyes. The book was first produced as a textile publication, with illustrations inspired by Asafo flags from Ghana — visual symbols traditionally used to share stories of resistance and community. These images were later translated into a series of large-scale flags, transforming testimony into a public and symbolic form.
